CNC Machining Design
CNC machining design is all about thinking and planning about what you’re going to build. Take note that if you are planning properly then you can expect good results. A wise man once said that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. You don’t want to start doing something without planning properly.
The CNC machining process begins with the designing phase. If you want to do CNC machining properly then you’ll have to make sure that you design things properly first.
There are several things that you have to ask your self when you are in the design phase of CNC machining. Questions that you may have to ask yourself are, how big will this object be? Are you thinking of making an object that is as big as a mouse or an object that is as big as an elephant?
Smaller objects will need more precise measurements and a more precise CNC machining device.
Larger object will require more space and larger CNC machining devices.
What material will this object be made of? Are you going to make an object out of wood or are you going to make an object out of steel? If you’re making an object that is made of wood then you’ll need a CNC machining device that is precise enough to cut curves on corners and keep the object intact.
If you’re making an object out of steel then you’ll have to be certain that you’re CNC machining device is strong enough to cut through the material and mould the object appropriately.
Who is the customer and how is the customer going to use it? If you’re making an object for yourself then all you have to worry about is making yourself happy. The scenario is different when you have to make a customer happy. If you want to be a successful CNC machining operator then you have to understand your client, aside from understanding how to operate the machine.
Communicating with your client is one of the most important tasks in business and if you plan to stay in the CNC machining business then you’ll have to make your customers happy. Always ask your clients questions and allow them to express themselves. The more you understand your customer’s requirements translate into better chances of making them happy.
Are you going to be making a part or an art piece? Parts are basically mechanical components that function in a particular way.
Most parts that you’ll make using the CNC machining device are smaller parts of a bigger machine. Make sure these parts will fit properly or else expect rework. Art is basically an expressive object. It may perform a function although most art objects are non-functional anyway. They are used mostly for decorative purposes.
If you’re making art then just make sure your final product is beautiful.
On a final note, visualize what you want. You must be able to imagine your final output. If you are having difficulty imagining what you want then you are going to expect difficulty along the way.
You can try sketching or using the computer when trying to make a blueprint of your final product so that you don’t encounter too many design problems.
